ADA-Accessible Portable Restroom Planning

Accessibility is a site-layout responsibility as well as a restroom selection. An accessible unit is most useful when guests or workers can reach it by a reasonably firm, level, unobstructed route and have enough surrounding space to approach and use the entrance.

Begin with the route

Walk the approach as a user would. Check slopes, loose gravel, curbs, cords, parked vehicles, landscaping, puddles, and temporary barriers. The route should connect logically to accessible parking, the event area, or the active work zone. If the surface may change, identify how the path will remain usable.

Think beyond the entrance

Preserve space around the unit for turning and maneuvering, and avoid placing it beside a drop-off, fence, wall, or queue that narrows the approach. Keep signs and lighting readable without creating glare or obstacles. At events, do not hide the accessible unit behind vendor equipment; inclusion depends on equal discoverability and practical access.

Coordinate requirements responsibly

Venue policies, project requirements, and applicable accessibility standards should be reviewed by the responsible organizer or authority. This page offers planning guidance, not a legal determination or permit approval.
